Artist Statement

As I am writing this artist statement I do so with a smile, because I have yet to see myself as an artist.  I have long held traditional artist (dancers, writers, painters and film-makers) in high regard because of their ability to express themselves effectively through their art forms.  I find it amusing to compare myself with them because I have yet to create, through a medium, a way to express interests and issues that I find important for the  others to see.  But this will soon change.   I’m choosing media as my forum to express myself but it is only a start; if I was to compare it to a life cycle I would be in the infancy stage of being an artist.  So I will treat this statement as a living document that will evolve as I do.  What my goals are and how I choose to express them today will undeniably change tomorrow as I am exposed to, and educated on, how to use different forms of media.  Being a former inner city kid I see the need for more responsible messages and positive images that would help cultivate communities like mine.  If I can contribute somehow through media to this cause in a large or small capacity I would feel like an artist that has grown up.  So as the saying goes it takes a village to raise a child, it will also take one to raise this infant artist so I welcome you to accompany me on this journey.

  1. I don't know that as an artist we ever stop learning and evolving. I for one haven't stopped. I like the way you describe your journey and they way you are open to grow and evolve. If you had to pick a form of media you would like to do more with, what would it be? I'd be interested to see where you see your self in the next feel years with your art/media. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. Hello Jamal,

Your artist statement is very honest and thoughtful. My favorite line is:

So I will treat this statement as a living document that will evolve as I do.

I think that this is a very good approach because an artist statement deals with the process in which we perceive our identity, ideas and desires. And, I agree with Stephanie that this process is always in progress. This is why it would be really interesting if you could find a way to document your artistic involvement on this blog and share your thoughts with us. Maybe you already have sources of inspiration, like films, books, media projects that had an impact on the decisions you made in your life.. It doesn't have to be “a piece of art” that you've encountered in a museum, it can be many different things.

Some classmates wrote about TV shows, other about crochet art – Reading their statements can help you to articulate what you find inspiring. Try to include images, and links to texts, videos, other blogs in your blog.

I am looking forward to accompany each other on this exciting journey!

    Best,
    Martyna

PS: I was thinking a lot about these sentences:

“Being a former inner city kid I see the need for more responsible messages and positive images that would help cultivate communities like mine.  If I can contribute somehow through media to this cause in a large or small capacity I would feel like an artist that has grown up.”

I really like the idea that we can contribute to our community through art-making. This made me think about a great essay by the writer bell hooks “Art on My Mind” in which she reflects upon the function of art in the African-American community. Please take the time to read it – I am interested in hearing your thoughts!

    Best,
    Martyna
